A donation from the ski committee of the Icelandic Airline Pilots' Association

9.3.2006

The 31st annual ski week of the Airline Pilots’ Association was held on 21-28 January in Kleinarl, Austria. Participants numbered 344 from 20 countries, including Australia, Japan and north to Iceland and Canada. Each year, one nation acts as organiser and host, and this year it was Iceland’s turn.

One of the ski week’s fixed events is a lottery, and this year’s main prize was a gift certificate for two to one of Icelandair’s destinations. The prize went to a Canadian flight captain by the name of George Ellerbeck. The following day he approached the chairman of the Icelandic Airline Pilots’ Ski Committee and asked to donate the prize to an Icelandic charity, suggesting that the tickets be sold at an auction the following day. A young Icelandic pilot, Haraldur Óskarsson, bought the gift certificate for EUR 1,100, and the Ski Committee decided to donate the sum to the Special Children Travel Fund for children with long-term illnesses.

The fund and its work was introduced prior to the auction, and guests expressed their appreciation for this amazing effort.

The Icelandic Airline Pilots’ Ski Committee later decided to double the value of the gift certificate, and it gives us great pleasure to announce that Icelandair’s contribution to the lottery is now being awarded to the Special Children Travel Fund as an ISK 160,000 donation.

With best wishes,
On behalf of the Icelandic Airline Pilots’ Ski Committee
Páll Stefánsson, flight captain
